Original, gold leaf cyanotype. Hand-brush coated. Hand finished with 24ct gold leaf. Handprinted on handmade recycled cotton rag paper.
This artwork was inspired by Mae Carol Jemison, an American engineer, physician and former NASA astronaut. She was the first African American woman to travel into space, she orbited the earth for eight days in 1992 aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour.
Hailing All Frequencies (Ode To Mae Jemison)was created by constructing a hand-cut photographic collage of fashion style portraiture and planets made of chemigrams on photographic film. The large scale negative was then contact printed onto handmade paper, brush coated with light sensitive chemicals before drying in a dark room. Once exposed to daylight, the piece was washed to develop a cyan blue colour, pressed dry and then hand finished with 24 carat gold leaf.
