Original 3-D gold cyanotype. Inspired by Ada Lovelace. Printed on handmade 100% cotton rag paper.
Inspired by mathematician, writer and 'First Lady' of computer programming Ada Lovelace. A visionary who gave us a first glimpse of the idea of universal computation, Lovelace was drawn to abstract ways of thinking using ‘poetical science.’ Her thwarted potential, passion and imaginative intuition, have made her a powerful symbol for modern women in technology.
Flyology (The Language Of Lovelace 3D) XS was created by constructing a hand-cut collage using female photographic portraiture, photographs of an antique tin toy horse and photograms of insect wings.
After coating the handmade paper with light-sensitive chemistry, it is left to dry in a dark room. The large scale negative is then contact printed onto the paper by exposing to daylight (UV rays). The print is then processed by thoroughly washing in water to remove any unexposed solution. It can then be hung to dry, developing to full density Prussian blue after 24 hours. Once the image is fixed it is hand finished with 24-carat gold leaf and the pieces are cut out and fixed into 3D layers.
