DESCRIPTION
This artwork was inspired by Amelia Earhart, the pioneering female aviator and advocate for gender equality and defying cultural norms.
TECHNIQUE
Amelia the Aviatress (Soaring Over Blue Starry Skies) was created by photographing a hand-cut collage of vintage fashion portraiture and illustrations of birds. The digital negative was then contact printed onto hand shaped circular paper that had been hand-brushed with chemicals, before drying in a dark room. Once exposed to light, the piece was washed to develop a cyan blue colour, pressed dry and then hand finished with variegated zinc leaf. The deep circular frame was handmade to house the float mounted piece.
