This artwork was inspired by anthropomorphism, birds and the Breton striped sweater, in particular, the one worn by James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause.
Circular Masquerading Merops in Red was created by photographing a hand-cut collage made from fashion portraiture, an illustration of a Bee Eater (Merops in Ancient Greek) and the surface textures from a handmade chemigram.
The digital negative was then contact printed onto paper that had been hand-brushed with chemicals, before drying in a dark room. Once exposed to light, the piece was washed to develop it's cyan blue colour and hand-finished with 24ct gold leaf and red acrylic paint.
