Circular framed, original, circular mixed media, copper leaf cyanotype. Hand-brush coated. Hand finished with chemical washed Italian copper leaf. Handprinted on handmade 100% recycled cotton rag paper.
This artwork was inspired by Marie Curie, double Nobel Prize winner who changed the world with her pioneering work on studying radioactivity and research into cancer treatments. Symbolised here by cells and butterflies, they represent endurance, change, hope and life cycles.
Circular Nobel Marie II Study (No1) XS was created by photographing a hand-cut collage of female photographic portraiture, a blue morpho butterfly and hand illustrations of cells. The digital negative was then contact printed onto hand shaped circular paper that had been hand-brushed with chemicals, before drying in a dark room. Once exposed to light, the piece was washed to develop a cyan blue colour, pressed dry and then hand finished with Italian copper leaf that's been treated with an oxidisation and acid chemical wash before applying.
