Framed, original cyanotype on porcelain.
Hand finished with burnt sienna gum bichromate overprint.
Printed on bisque fired porcelain disk.

This artwork was inspired by English novelist Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley. A skilled editor and critic, influential travel writer, literary historian, poet and political radical, she is best known for her gothic horror classic Frankenstein. Considered an early example of science fiction, this wildly inventive and strikingly original tale was influenced by Mary’s passion for science, experimentation and thirst for knowledge.

Mary's Modern Prometheus (Study On Porcelain) was created by photographing a hand-cut collage of female portraiture, hand printed paper negatives of petri dish cultures and microscopic cell structures and an illustration of a fox skull. The digital negative was then contact printed onto hand shaped, bisque fired porcelain disk brush coated with cyanotype chemicals, before drying in a dark room. Once exposed to light, the piece was washed and soaked for 3-4 weeks to develop a pale cyan blue colour, air dried and then the process repeated with a gum bichromate over printed layer.

Dimensions - 130mm diameter (unframed) 210mm diameter (framed) x 30mm frame depth x 13mm frame face

Substrate - Handprinted onto 3mm thick bisque fired, hand-shaped paper porcelain disk, linen pressed texture.

Mount - We use float mounting for all of our framed cyanotypes. The artwork floats above a snow-white mount board, showcasing the paper texture and deckled edging.

Framing - This artwork is sold framed.

Framed artwork will arrive ready to hang.

Each frame is handmade by our London based design team. They prime and sand the wooden frame before spraying black or white soft-sheen paint to achieve the highest quality finish. All frames come with gallery spec, 3mm thick anti-reflective/ UV glazing as standard.

If you would like a bespoke frame, please get in touch to discuss alternative colours, gilding and glazing options.
