Original mixed media gold leaf cyanotype. Hand-brush coated. Hand finished with petal pigments and 22ct yellow gold leaf. Mounted. Handprinted on Fabriano Artistico Watercolour paper.
This artwork was inspired by anthropomorphism, birds and the Breton striped sweater, in particular, the one worn by James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause.
Masquerading Merops (Square) was created by photographing a hand-cut collage made from fashion portraiture, an illustration of a Bee Eater (Merops in Ancient Greek) and the surface textures from a handmade chemigram. The digital negative was then contact printed onto paper that had been hand-brushed with chemicals, before drying in a dark room. Once exposed to light, the piece was washed to develop a cyan blue colour and hand finished with crushed petal pigments and 22ct yellow gold leaf.
