DESCRIPTION
This artwork was inspired by anthropomorphism, birds and the Breton striped sweater, in particular, the one worn by James Dean in Rebel Without A Cause.
TECHNIQUE
Masquerading Merops (Square) was created by photographing a hand-cut collage made from fashion portraiture, an illustration of a Bee Eater (Merops in Ancient Greek) and the surface textures from a handmade chemigram. The digital negative was then contact printed onto paper that had been hand-brushed with chemicals, before drying in a dark room. Once exposed to light, the piece was washed to develop a cyan blue colour and hand finished with crushed petal pigments and 22ct yellow gold leaf.
