Handprinted on handmade recycled 100% cotton rag paper.
This work was inspired by Coco Chanel, one of the most powerful women in fashion. Her iconic design aesthetic redefined gender roles- giving women the gift of pants, she stressed that a person should express themselves on how they feel and not how their gender tells them to.
The title is taken from a song called "Who Has Seen Coco" linked to her days as a cabaret singer.
Qui Qu'a Vu Coco (Square) was created by photographing a hand-cut collage of female portraiture, hand illustrations of botanical specimens, surface textures from chemigrams and cellscapes. The digital negative was then contact printed onto handmade paper that had been hand-brushed with chemicals, before drying in a dark room. Once exposed to light, the piece was washed to develop a cyan blue colour. Once dried, the piece is hand finished with 24ct gold leaf.
