Inspiration
This work is a feminine take on the ancient Roman God of new beginnings. Looking to the past and the future with two faces, it is a representation of reflection, transition, growth and time. A depiction of both public and private faces and in what means we choose to reveal them.
Technique
Musings At Midnight (Study On Porcelain) was created by photographing a hand-cut collage of female photographic portraiture and the surface textures of chemigrams.
After shaping, pressing and firing the porcelain disks, they are brush coated with the melted, sensitised silver gelatin emulsion under the red safelight light and then left to dry in a completely dark room. The large scale negative is contact printed onto the porcelain by exposing using a large format photographic enlarger. The disk is then processed in conventional black & white chemistry. The porcelain must then be thoroughly soaked in water to remove any silver residue. It can then be left to dry ready for mounting and framing.
Dimensions
Unframed: 150mm diameter
Framed: 210mm diameter x 30mm depth x 13mm face
Material
Hand-shaped, high fired paper porcelain disk:
3mm / paper porcelain ceramic disk / silver gelatin liquid photographic emulsion
Mount
We use float mounting for all of our framed pieces. The artwork floats above a snow-white mount board, showcasing the paper texture and deckled edging.
Framing
Framed artwork will arrive ready to hang.
Each frame is handmade by our London based design team. They prime and sand the wooden frame before spraying black or white soft-sheen paint to achieve the highest quality finish. All frames come with gallery spec, 3mm thick anti-reflective/ UV glazing as standard.
If you would like a bespoke frame, please get in touch to discuss alternative colours, gilding and glazing options.
