Inspiration
This artwork was inspired by respected academic and tragic heroine Hypatia and Scottish stargazer and Harvard Computer Williamina Fleming.

Hypatia was one of the last great thinkers of ancient Alexandria, she was one of the first women to study and teach mathematics, philosophy and astronomy. She is a feminist icon and empowering role model for female intellectuals in modern times.

During her career, Fleming helped lay the foundations for modern astronomy and overcame the impossible odds as an immigrant and as a women. She pioneered in the classification of stellar spectra, cataloguing over 10,000 stars and other astronomical phenomena including her discovery of the Horsehead Nebula in 1888.

Technique
Stargazing And Trailblazing (Ode To Hypatia & Mina) was created by constructing a hand-cut collage using female photographic portraiture, a photogram of a wasp nest combined with hand-painted chemigrams creating planetary structures, photograms from antique glass slides of interstellar clouds, and hand-printed surface textures of lunar craters.

After coating the vintage computer punch cards with light-sensitive chemistry, they are left to dry in a dark room. The large scale negatives are contact printed onto the paper by exposing to daylight (UV rays). The cards are processed by thoroughly washing in water to remove any unexposed solution, then hung to dry, developing to full density Prussian blue after 24 hours. Once dry, the cards are window mounted.
