Inspired by parachutist Tiny Broadwick

Tiny Broadwick, known as the 'First Lady of Parachuting', defied early 20th-century conventions with her fearless skydiving exploits. Making over 1,000 jumps, she became the first woman to parachute from an airplane and the first person to perform a premeditated freefall. Her daring spirit and unwavering resolve helped pave the way for women in adventure and aviation.

Tiny Broadwick is a name synonymous with courage and sky-high determination. In an era when the skies were uncharted territory, Tiny fearlessly soared into history as a pioneering parachutist. Her spirit, boundless as the heavens themselves, challenged conventions and inspired generations to take flight, both in the air and in their dreams.

With each daring leap, Tiny Broadwick painted a vivid canvas of resilience, bravery, and a relentless pursuit of boundless horizons. Her legacy remains an enduring testament to the indomitable human spirit, forever celebrated in the annals of aviation history.

Technique

Stellar Waltz (Tiny's Dance Through the Clouds) was created by constructing a hand-cut collage using female photographic portraiture and handmade costumes, combined with photograms of antique glass slides of the earth and planets, illustrations of parachutes, hot air balloons and lunar cycles.

After coating the handmade paper sheets with light-sensitive chemistry, they are left to dry in a dark room. The large scale negatives are then contact printed onto the paper by exposure to daylight (UV rays). The prints are then processed by thoroughly washing in water to remove any unexposed solution, then be hung to dry, developing to full density Prussian blue after 24 hours.

Once dried the individual elements are hand cut and collaged together to create a multi-layered paper cut artwork and finished with 24-carat gold leaf.
