Inspiration
This artwork was inspired by Virginia Woolf, considered to be one of the most innovative modernist authors of the 20th century. She was a pioneer in the use of stream of consciousness as a narrative device, best known for being the author of Mrs Dalloway and To The Lighthouse.
Both in style and subject matter, Woolf’s work captures the fast-changing world in which she was working, from transformations in gender roles, sexuality and class to technologies such as cars, airplanes and cinema.
Technique
To The Lighthouse Study (Ode To Virginia Woolf) was created by constructing a hand-cut collage using female photographic portraiture, photographs of a lighthouse and architectural chimney stacks, rivers and waterways with chemigrams.
After coating the watercolour paper with light-sensitive chemistry, it is left to dry in a dark room. The large scale negative is then contact printed onto the paper by exposing to daylight (UV rays). The print is then processed by thoroughly washing in water to remove any unexposed solution. It can then be hung to dry, developing to full density Prussian blue after 24 hours.
